Making Our Communities More Senior-Friendly

The average age of our population is growing older very rapidly.  This article refers to it as the “aging boom” and notes that “every day for the next few decades, thousands of baby-boomers will turn 65.”  Most of our cities and communities are designed and built for young, active people and are not functional for our senior citizens.  This can cause  seniors to retreat and withdraw to their home with limited community interaction.  This article discusses this problem and also some of the solutions that are being implemented to improve the situation.  Mixed-use developments are better for seniors because they can walk to businesses and restaurants.  Some communities are using otherwise idle school buses to pick up seniors and take them grocery shopping.  It’s also nice to see some of the communities in the Atlanta area implementing some thoughtful ideas for more senior-friendly development.
