Although we have dozens of classes of Medicaid in Georgia, there is a clear limit on the types of long-term care that are covered. Medicaid does not pay for assisted living or memory care in Georgia. Georgia Medicaid does pay for skilled nursing facilities (nursing homes). We also have a Medicaid Waiver program that pays for care in a personal care home or home care at home. The home care benefit is limited, with most applicants receiving less than 40 hours of home care a week.
With all these classes of Medicaid for long-term care, the recipient has to pay a monthly copay based on their income. Medicaid calls this copay Patient Liability. The calculation varies by class of Medicaid, but basically, the care recipient pays most of their income toward the cost of their care and Medicaid pays the balance directly to the provider.
